The best show in the universe to me is Buffy: The Vampire Slayer! I know for those uniniated to the Buffy greatness might be snickering not-so-quietly behind my back now. Your many questions will go like this:
- What the heck is the name 'Buffy' anyway?
- A girly girl as a Superhero? Come on, get real.
- Vampires and demons are just boogeyman for the kids.
- If it's that good how come it never won an Emmy?
- I rather watch something more intelligent like Paris Hilton in 'The Simple Life'.
Well, let me just answer all that for you.
Introducing Buffy Anne Summers. The Buff. The Buffster. She's a hottie with a mean hook and a smart lip. Ladies and Gentleman, she IS the Chosen One. The Slayer.
Her mission: To protect the citizens of her town, Sunnydale, and the whole world from all the evil undead walking in the night. From pesky blood-sucking vampires to brain-removing monsters. There has never been a girl superhero that's so cool. She kick-boxes. Do back-flips. Stakes, slays and vamp-dusts.
Buffy has some exceedingly loyal sidekicks, aka the Scooby Gang who help her solve monster mysteries and slay a vamp or two. The core group comprises of Willow, the wacky Wiccan witch, Xander, the comedic relief and Giles, the Watcher, who's supposed to watch and guide Buffy.
The entire show just stretches the zany imagination of the die-hard fans. It's essentially about Good vs Evil. The choices we make in life. The sacrifices for the greater good. Something like Spiderman: With great power comes great responsibility.
It focused also on the true meaning of friendship. Of strangers becoming friends, friends becoming enemies, and enemies becoming friends. All so confusing and an interesting insight into human nature. And that true friendships will not only stand the test of time, but also the onslaught of the end-of-the-world apocalypes.
Dramatic and mostly traumatic romances. Almost all of the love relationships end on a bad screwed-up note. Just like real life, eh? Boyfriends turning evil the morning after, boyfriends two-timing and burning you, fiancee leaving you at the altar and worse of all, evil murderer out to shoot your best friend, the Slayer, but end up killing your girlfriend in mistake.
At the end, the good guys will always prevail against the bad guys. Well, at least in the TV world. It somehow restores your faith in the goodness of mankind. In a distorted make-believe kind of way. The best kind.
