Dumbledore told Harry all about Lord Voldemort's background - he was born half-blood (dad's a muggle and mom's a witch), mom died so he was sent to the orphanage and then he went to Hogwarts, he displayed cunningness and desire for power from a young age. All this is because Dumbledore wants Harry to understand more about Voldemort and help find all the Horcruxes he made. What is a Horcrux? An object in which a Dark wizard has hidden a part of his soul. With part of a wizard's soul thus stored, the wizard becomes immortal so long as the Horcrux remains intact, hidden away in a safe location. But to create a Horcrux the creator must commit a murder which, as "the supreme act of evil," "rips the soul apart. For example, in Book 2: The chamber of secrets, the diary of Tom Riddle is an Horcrux, which after being stabbed by Harry it is completely destroyed.
Dumbledore and Harry found another Horcrux, but to get it Dumbledore has decided to drink the poisonous water from the basin in order to get the Horcrux in a form of a locket. After getting it they apparate (like teleport) back to Hogwarts only to discover it's under attacked by Death Eaters (bad guys working for Voldemort). Arriving on top of a tower in Hogwarts they were ambushed and Dumbledore cast a spell to made Harry invisible to keep him safe. Weaken from the poison, Dumbledore tried negotiating with the Head of the Death Eaters, none other than Draco Malfoy. Suddenly Severus Snape burst into the scene, Dumbledore plead with him to help Dumbledore but Snape just killed him.
Book 7: What really happened:
Leaving the Dursleys
Snape tells Lord Voldemort the date Harry will leave the Dursleys' house. Order Of the Phoenix members arrive to sneak Harry from the house but they were attacked by Voldemort and Death Eaters. After a narrow escape, Harry and his companions discover that George Weasley lost an ear to Snape, and Mad-Eye Moody was killed by Voldemort.
Dumbledore's will left 3 bequests: Ron is given Dumbledore's Deluminator, with the power to capture lights; Hermione receives a book of children's stories written in Ancient Runes; Harry inherits Gryffindor's sword and the Snitch he caught in his first ever Quidditch match. The Ministry withholds the sword, claiming it was not actually Dumbledore's. All these items will prove invaluable in the story later.
Search for the Horcruxes
Harry sets on a quest to search for the remaining Horcruxes with Hermione and Ron. They know it's the only way to kill Voldemort and makes sure he never comes back. This part is all about the trio finding out what objects are the Horcruxes, where they are located and how much difficulties and dangers they face to retrieve it. They run into traps set by Voldemort and almost got killed by him or nearly captured by the Death Eaters.Stole the locket Horcrux from Dolores Umbridge in Ministry of Magic.
Search for the the Gryffindor's sword to destroy the Horcrux.
Ron feels that this is a pointless quest and leaves.
Harry and Hermione go to Godric's Hollow hoping that Dumbledore had left the sword there. It's a trap! A narrow escape, but Hermione accidentally breaks Harry's wand.
A silvery doe-shaped Patronus appears and leads Harry to Gryffindor's real sword, hidden in a frozen pond. Harry dives, but the locket Horcrux around Harry's neck tries to strangle him.
Ron returns and saves Harry, got the sword and destroys the Horcrux with it. Ron informs Harry and Hermione that the Deluminator showed him the way back to them.
Hermione determines their next step: to speak to Xenophilius Lovegood, Luna Lovegood's father, and ask him about Grindelwald's mark, a symbol that they have seen in the book Dumbledore bequeathed to Hermione.
The Deathly Hallows
At the Lovegoods' house, Xenophilius tells them the symbol represents the Deathly Hallows, a trio of magical artifacts given long ago to three brothers by Death: The Elder Wand, Resurrection Stone & Invisibility Cloak.Another trap! Xenophilius betrays them to save Luna, who is being held captive. They manage to escape the Death Eaters by using Harry's Invisibility Cloak, which he now believes to be a Deathly Hallow.
At their camp, Harry accidentally says "Voldemort". The name has been Tabooed so that anyone speaking it can be traced. They got captured and taken to the Malfoy manor—the new Death Eater headquarters.
After finding the sword among the trio's possessions, Bellatrix fears they have broken into her vault at Gringott's Bank. Harry and Ron are imprisoned in the cellar with Luna Lovegood and Mr Ollivander. Upstairs, Hermione is tortured for information.
Dobby appears in the cellar to free the prisoners, Harry disarms Bellatrix and Draco Malfoy. They escape with Hermione.
Harry plots with Griphook the goblin to break into the Lestranges' vault. So they manage to retrieve a Horcrux in the form of Helga Hufflepuff's tea cup. Griphook betrays them and takes the sword. Harry, Ron and Hermione escape on a dragon that guards the vaults.
Voldemort now realizes that his Horcruxes are being destroyed. He accidentally reveals through his telepathic link with Harry that a Horcrux is hidden at Hogwarts.
The Battle of Hogwarts
The trio enter Hogwarts, Harry alerts Professor McGonagall to Voldemort's impending arrival, she takes charge, and the younger students are evacuated. As the Death Eaters attack, Harry learns that Ravenclaw's Diadem is the Horcrux, and found it in the Room of Requirement (the same one the DA were training in Order of the Phoenix). Ron and Hermione go to the Chamber of Secrets to retrieve basilisk fangs - they destroy Hufflepuff's Cup.
In the Room of Requirement Crabbe mishandles a powerful spell and the Room's contents afire, Harry and his friends escape, rescuing Malfoy and Goyle. The Diadem is destroyed by the magical fire.
After having another vision of Voldemort, Harry leads his friends to the Shrieking Shack (movie 3), where Voldemort orders Nagini to kill Snape. Voldemort believes that as Snape killed Dumbledore, the Elder Wand's previous master, the wand's allegiance is now to him.
As he lay dying, Snape gives his memories to Harry, who uses the Pensieve and learns that Snape was loyal to Dumbledore, motivated by his lifelong love for Lily Evans, Harry's mother. Dumbledore, who was dying after being poisoned by Gaunt's Horcrux ring, instructed Snape to kill him if necessary to spare Draco from the deed. Snape had always been protecting Harry, and it was he who sent the doe Patronus—the same form as Lily's—to lead Harry to Gryffindor's sword. Harry also discovers that he himself is a Horcrux, and that Voldemort cannot be killed while Harry remains alive.
Voldemort's forces have begun a large-scale attack on Hogwarts, and with Hogwarts' defenses crumbling, Remus Lupin, his wife Tonks, and Fred Weasley are killed in the battle.
Resigned to his fate, Harry makes his way to the Forbidden Forest where Voldemort awaits. As Harry leaves, he tells Neville Longbottom that the snake, Nagini, must be destroyed.
Realising that his imminent death is "the close" referred to in the inscription on the Snitch, Harry puts it to his lips saying, "I am about to die". The Snitch opens to reveal the Resurrection Stone. Harry uses the Stone to summon the spirits of his loved ones who comfort him. When he reaches Voldemort, Harry drops the Stone and prepared for death, he allows Voldemort to curse him with the Avada Kedavra (killing) curse.
Harry awakens in what appears to be King's Cross railway station. A wounded and dying creature is writhing on the floor, representing Voldemort's damaged soul. Harry meets Albus Dumbledore, who explains that Harry cannot die while the blood carrying Lily's protection resides in Voldemort's body. He further explains that the part of Voldemort's soul within Harry has been destroyed by the Killing Curse. Harry has the choice of "going on", or continuing with life and stopping Voldemort; he chooses the latter.
Back in the forest, on Voldemort's orders, a captured Hagrid carries Harry (feigning death) back to Hogwarts as a trophy. Neville, a pureblood, refuses to join Voldemort; as punishment, Voldemort puts the Sorting Hat upon his head and sets it ablaze. At that moment, reinforcements charge in and the battle resumes.
Amidst the confusion, Harry covers himself with the Invisibility Cloak. Neville pulls Godric Gryffindor's sword from the Sorting Hat and beheads Nagini, destroying the final Horcrux
Harry confronts Voldemort, realising that Draco Malfoy was the true master of the Elder Wand, for it was Draco who had disarmed Dumbledore and thus beaten him in battle, while Snape was acting according to Dumbledore's wishes. When Harry later disarmed Draco, the Elder Wand's allegiance passed to him.
Voldemort casts Avada Kedavra, but the Elder Wand protects its master and the spell rebounds, killing Voldemort.
As celebrations erupt, Harry seeks solitude with Ron and Hermione in Dumbledore's office. Harry uses the immense power of the Elder Wand to repair his own wand, and elects to return the Elder Wand to Dumbledore's tomb rather than keeping it for himself. He will not seek the Stone he dropped in the forest. He decides, however, to keep the Invisibility Cloak.
Epilogue
In the story's epilogue, set nineteen years later, Ginny Weasley and Harry have three children named James, Albus Severus, and Lily. Ron and Hermione have two children named Rose and Hugo. The book ends with the line: "The scar had not pained Harry for nineteen years. All was well."
